Janice Milstein, PhD, BCBA-D

Dr. Milstein earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology at Claremont Graduate University in California. She is a doctoral-level board certified behavior analyst, dedicated to helping children with special needs by providing ABA services through her private consultation practice, Better Behavior, which is based in northern New Jersey.  
Better Behavior was born from Dr. Milstein's deep commitment to delivering behavioral services during the global health crisis, enabling children to receive treatment and to progress.

Skills & Experience

School Collaboration

Dr. Milstein collaborates with educators to create learning environments that maximize student success and improves educational practices by working with child study teams, training staff, leading professional development workshops, developing individualized education plans (IEP) and overseeing ABA classrooms.  She conducts assessments such as Independent Education Evaluations (IEE), Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA), and Verbal Behavior-Milestones Assessment and Program Placement (VB-MAPP). Dr. Milstein also develops comprehensive Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) to reduce behaviors that interfere with learning and school functioning.

In-Home Therapy
She develops and oversees in-home ABA therapy programs to ensure young children with autism and other delays receive effective, scientifically validated interventions that build core skills. She coordinates care with service providers and teachers to ensure consistency, more rapid acquisition, generalized gains, and enduring change.

Claremont Autism Center
For many years, she worked as both Associate Clinical Director and Clinical Research Associate at the Claremont Autism Center, a highly regarded treatment program based at Claremont McKenna College in California. In addition to providing therapy and conducting research,
Dr. Milstein trained and supervised student therapists, evaluated child progress, monitored treatment fidelity, educated and trained parents, and improved treatment outcomes.

Award-Wining Research & Professional Associations
Dr. Milstein pioneered video modeling as an effective intervention for teaching autistic children complex skills, a seminal study published in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis that sparked a large body of research demonstrating success with a wide variety of skills. Video modeling was later identified as one of 11 evidence-based practices by the National Autism Center. 

 

Dr. Milstein has also received Outstanding Research Awards from the Association for Behavior Analysis, and is a member of the New Jersey Association of Applied Behavior Analysis, Autism NJ, and the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts.
